Presentation: Predicting BESS Degradation in Tropical Environments: Lessons from Thailand for Isolated Power Systems.
Associate Professor Dr.-Ing. Nipon Ketjoy is the Director of the School of Renewable Energy and Smart Grid Technology (SGtech) at Naresuan University, Thailand. He has more than 25 years of experience in photovoltaics, hybrid power systems, and mini- and microgrids. He also leads SGtech’s Master’s and PhD programmes in Smart Grid Technology.
He has led major projects for Thailand’s Ministry of Energy, the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), NEDO (Japan) and GIZ (Germany). Notably, he headed the development of Thailand’s national Smart Grid Action Plan and Energy Storage Action Plan. His other projects include a 120 kW PV microgrid stabilisation demonstration, PEA’s Green Island project and net-zero microgrids for the public sector.
His current work focuses on virtual power plants and distribution grids with high shares of variable renewable energy. In collaboration with the Hawaiʻi Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) at the University of Hawaiʻi, he is working on MOBESS, a project that uses machine learning to optimise battery energy storage systems for microgrids.
He holds a Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) in Electrical Engineering, awarded magna cum laude, from the University of Kassel, Germany. He also holds several Thai patents and serves on the Advisory Committee of IEEE PES Thailand.
