Day Three

Day 3 Thursday, 19 November 2026, NUSA PENIDA ISLAND TOUR

Three Nusa: From Diesel Generation to a Smart Microgrid

08:00-17:00 – Nusa Penida Island
The PLN Three Nusa isolated power system supplies Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan in Bali. Historically dominated by diesel generation, the system has approximately 21 MW of installed diesel capacity and a peak demand of around 17.4 MW with an average annual peak load growth more than 9%.

The key renewable asset is the Suana hybrid power plant, commissioned for the 2022 G20 period. It integrates 4.2 MWp of solar PV (3.5 MWac), a 3 MW battery energy storage system,
and diesel generation. By August 2024, the solar plant had generated 3.7 GWh, representing 6.57% of total system generation, with an effective capacity factor of approximately 18%.

In November 2025, PLN formally commissioned an automated Smart Microgrid, enabling realtime coordination and dispatch of solar PV, battery storage and diesel generation across
the three Nusa islands. The system demonstrates how advanced energy management can optimise renewable utilisation while maintaining reliability in an isolated grid.

PLN’s 2025–2034 plan envisages further integration of 4.5 MW solar-plus-storage in 2026–27 and 10 MW wind-plus-storage in 2027–28. These projects would progressively increase renewable penetration and reduce reliance on diesel generation, while requiring advanced control, forecasting and storage coordination to maintain system stability
